Challenges, solutions and constant growth
SAGA is solidly rooted in history, while looking to the future. The company was founded in 2005, in Ravenna, with the aim of radically innovating the railway maintenance sector, a new service for the RFI (Italian State Railway). It offered a small but significant change: the repair of turnout frogs as part of regular, scheduled maintenance, and no longer as a temporary, emergency measure, carried out exclusively by RFI personnel.
After just six years of activity, the local unit in the Abruzzo region was born. It was an experimental centre with state-of-the-art facilities where early research into frog regeneration was carried out and SAGA’s main projects came to life. The company gradually acquired a central role in the railway sector thanks to a reduction in maintenance costs and increasingly rapid intervention.
Innovation travels along the same track as quality: in 2013 the company patented the RSW (Rail Switch Welding) System®, a robotic system for frog regeneration off-site that guarantees the utmost precision.
In the following years, the company continued its commitment to using its experience for new expansion. In 2018 PCM S.r.l. was born, a company dedicated to research and development in new technologies and material efficiency, as well as training highly specialised staff. The company’s constant growth has not even slowed down in 2020, the year that saw the opening of the new headquarters in the centre of Ravenna.
SAGA looks to the future with enthusiasm and determination, continually investing in advanced techniques and new generations, for a future with increasingly liveable cities, easy transport, high speed and sustainability.
Main Events
First worksite
After 4 years of experimentation, the first work in track possession is carried out for RFI.
Construction of the Scurcola local centre
A local centre is created in Scurcola Marsicana (L’Aquila): a workshop for vehicle maintenance and a centre for initial research and experimentation.
RSW System® patent
A robotic system for frog regeneration off-site is developed and patented at a European level.
First RFI Framework Agreement
Signing of the first framework agreement with the RFI, lasting three years, to regenerate 924 frogs off-site.
Development of an innovative dual-mode vehicle
Design and development of a road–rail vehicle that helps further standardise SAGA worksites.
Second worksite
Streamlining of procedures
Increased output thanks to a reorganisation and optimisation of procedures.
Birth of PCM
A company dedicated specifically to research and development, as well as to coordinating training activities.
New RFI Framework Agreement
Award of a new three-year framework agreement, to regenerate 1,090 frogs off-site.
New snow removal service
The Unimog bimodal vehicles are rendered multifunctional and equipped with an on-rail turbo cutter to free track and turnouts from snow and ice.
New service for tramway maintenance
Launch of a study to develop an automated system for tram track curve weldin
First tram worksite
Operational capacity: 25 m of curves repaired per day.
New headquarters
The new headquarters in the centre of Ravenna, a completely renovated 300 m2 building, opens.
Establishment of PCM Institute
The new and innovative training and examination center for the Industrial Sector of Railway Maintenance – Infrastructure Subsector, recognized by IIS CERT, is now operational.
